From Hong Kong Ballet to nurturing the next generation – meet ATAP teacher, Lynn Liang
In 2024, we were delighted to establish a Training Hub in Hong Kong, generously sponsored by The Croucher Hong Kong Charitable Trust, to deliver the in-person training component of our Affiliate Training and Assessment Programme across East Asia.
Former Hong Kong Ballet dancer, Lynn Liang, was among the first cohort of Affiliate teachers in this region, who completed the training last August and gained her Affiliation in January this year.
We had the pleasure of chatting to Lynn about her experience with the programme, and how it has positively impacted her students’ learning and engagement.
Can you tell us about your background as a ballet teacher?
I started teaching after leaving the Hong Kong Ballet in 2019 and am now a faculty member of Hong Kong Academy of Ballet’s Classical Ballet Training Programme. Throughout my dance career, I encountered several wonderful teachers who nurtured me and helped me become who I am today. I hope to pass on my experiences to the next generation, just as they did for me.
What led you to applying for our Affiliate Training and Assessment Programme?
I was introduced to the Affiliate Training and Assessment Programme through my experience with the School’s Inspire seminars over the past two years. These courses not only equipped me with valuable teaching knowledge but also sparked my interest in furthering my professional development. This newfound passion and the skills I gained motivated me to enrol in the ATAP course, as I wanted to build on the strong foundation I had developed and continue growing as a dance educator.

How did you find the one-week in-person course and the online training sessions that followed?
I found the course to be highly engaging and interactive. The opportunity to communicate directly with the instructor and fellow participants significantly enhanced my learning experience. Online training sessions also greatly benefit me by providing a variety of resources, including webinars and observation classes, which further enhance my understanding and skill development.
What did you enjoy most about the programme?
I loved how it put the focus on the students. It taught me how to adapt my teaching to suit each student’s needs and personality, rather than just pushing for perfect technique. In particular, the course highlighted how to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment, enabling students to feel confident and enjoy the process of learning ballet, which I found inspiring.
How have you integrated the ATAP principles into your teaching methods since becoming an Affiliate teacher?
Since becoming an Affiliate teacher, I have integrated the ATAP principles into my ballet teaching by continuously assessing student understanding throughout the classes. I design lessons that offer a variety of practice options to engage all students. I also support and inspire students to tap into their creativity and imagination through my creative dance classes.
How have you and your students found this new way of teaching, and have you noticed any changes in your students’ approach to ballet?
I’ve noticed a significant improvement in their attitude and engagement during classes. They’ve become more enthusiastic and proactive, especially in creative dance classes, where they thoroughly enjoy expressing themselves and creating their own choreography. This shift has been incredibly rewarding for me as well, and I’ve found that my relationship with my students has grown stronger and more connected than before.
Compared to other ballet training methods in Hong Kong, this approach feels more student-centred and encourages individuality, which complements the more traditional, technique-focused methods. It’s been inspiring to see my students develop not only their technical skills but also their creativity and confidence in their own artistic expression.
What would you say to other Hong Kong ballet teachers that are considering applying for our Affiliate Programme?
I would encourage other Hong Kong ballet teachers to apply for the Affiliate Programme. This course is worthwhile, offering a unique experience that can enhance your teaching skills and broaden your perspective. You’ll gain valuable insights, connect with fellow educators, and discover new methods that can positively impact your students.
The ATAP programme fosters a strong sense of community among dance educators. The resources and support provided through ATAP empower teachers to continually refine their craft, ensuring they stay at the forefront of dance education. This collaborative environment not only enhances individual teaching practices but also strengthens the overall quality of ballet instruction, benefiting both educators and students alike.
